Africa

Long-lasting conflicts in Africa have created significant obstacles to peace and justice in several countries. Transitions have tended to be from conflict toward peace but not always with a shift from autocracy to democracy, leaving societies ill-equipped to address past abuses to prevent future abuses.

Although post-conflict settings are particularly challenging, pursuing peace should not exclude justice. ICTJ has sought to enrich the ongoing debate about peace and justice in Africa, host to a range of justice and truth-seeking institutions.

ICTJ has offices in Cape Town, Monrovia, Kinshasa and Bujumbura and conducts work in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Liberia, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
